Relations, the second main heading of the first year’s course, were also introduced by concrete examples from daily life (e.g., “Ann is the mother of John,” “The Eiffel tower is higher than the Antwerp cathedral”) or from known mathematics (e.g., 3 divides 12, {1} is a subset of {1, 2, 3}). Relations were mathematized as sets of “couples” (that is to say, ordered pairs) and visually represented by arrow graphs or by Cartesian grid charts, which were not just approximate intuitive models, but acted as precise tools for teaching and comprehension (CBPM, 1964b) .In the study of relations, the graphic representation will play an essential role.
